As I was praying recently, I felt the Holy Spirit speak to me:
“I am crossing you over, I am bringing you across the Jordan. I am crossing you over from the old season into the new season”
As I sat with this I felt to go to Joshua 3 and read through the account of Israel crossing the Jordan River. I had a sense that there are keys within the passage for people who are in a season of transition or crossing over from one place to another.
Preparation for the Cross over
In verse 1-4 Israel had reached the Jordan and were camped at the banks in preparation for crossing into the promised land. It was the last obstacle to reaching God’s long awaited promise. It was almost time! Joshua sent instructions, through the officers, in preparation for what was about to happen. He told them to follow the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God. When it moved, they were to follow. They were to keep their distance from the Ark and let it to guide them, as they had not passed this way before.
In this time of transition, of crossing over, follow the presence of God. Do not be anxious for what lays ahead; do not worry about the waters (Isaiah 42:2). Father is saying He will guide us in the transition and that we are to follow His presence. Be alert and watching what He is doing. Just as the Israelites watched the ark move out, as we watch His movements at this time He will show us the way forward. For many people, this is a new season and you have not been this way before, do not rush ahead, wait for him he knows the way. He has planned your cross over before you even knew it would happen.
Consecrate yourself and see the amazing take place
Joshua sends word to the people to consecrate or sanctify themselves (v5). This is a time to dedicate yourself to God for the new season. If you are carrying anything from the past lay it down. You are about to cross over from a season of wondering to wonder. Prepare your heart to receive a new identity. Father is going to do something “amazing” or pala in the original language which means to surpass or extraordinary. In your transition get ready as God is about to do something amazing, it will surpass what you could have believed or hoped for.
Move in Faith and promotion will come
Joshua instructs the priests to move out (v6). The Lord speaks to Joshua and decrees He will promote him (v7) due to his obedience. Joshua had long lingered in the presence of God (Ex 33:11) at the tabernacle and he was one who kept the Law (Josh 1:8). God brings promotion to those who linger in His presence, who listen for His heart and follow His word. This position of surrender is where our strength to rise up and step out in faith comes from.
Decree the Promise
In verses 9-13 Joshua decrees the word of the Lord. Whatever word the Lord has given, begin to declare it. Prophecy over yourself the word of the Lord for your situation. This will strengthen your faith and set your heart on the promises of God.
Watch and see God’s faithfulness fulfilled
As the Israelites moved out (v14-17), the river stopped upstream and they crossed over the Jordan. The final obstacle to their transition was removed by God. He demonstrated his power and his protection over his people. The river that had once seemed impassable was passed over. They reached the banks of the promised land - the long awaited promise given to their forefathers was fulfilled. It was time to begin to walk in their inheritance. God is fulfilling his promise to bring you home. To establish you as his people with a place to call home.
Keys for the transition:
1) Follow his presence
2) Consecrate yourself in this transition and see his wonders take place
3) God will promote and position those who he has appointed, those who know Him and His ways.
4) Decree His words over your situation
5) God is faithful and will fulfil His promises – He will establish His people in their inheritance.
